Harpernomics – Round Two

This entry is part 1 of 27 in the series harpernomics

Once more, Stephen Harper is lashing out at the Opposition Parties, as he struggles to remain the Prime Minister. Frankly, his constant whining about the Opposition is wearing thin, because the fact is, the only reason we have a stimulus package today, is because of them. Not because of his policies, nor his planning, as in reality, he obviously never had one.

Back in October Mr. Harper said we’d be in a surplus, that we didn’t need a stimulus package, and then, and only then, when faced with a revolt by the opposition parties, did he admit that we were in trouble. He took time off even, so as to try and stave off defeat, and has now come up with his 30 Billion dollars deficit plan for this year.

Out of that, he plans to spend a quick 3 Billion, and all the opposition wants, is to know where it will go. MAKES SENSE TO ME!. After all, all Harper has to do, is tell parliament that this twenty million is going here, half a billion here, and it’s done. It seems to me, that if you aren’t willing to disclose where you are going to put taxpayer billions, you are trying something funny.

IT IS WHY WE HAVE AN OPPOSITION, TO KEEP GOVERNMENT IN CHECK. IT IS CALLED HAVING A BALANCE.

His constant complaining about the Opposition wanting to know where he is going to spend this three billion dollars, is scary. It makes me very nervous, because why should it be such a secret? He claims it will slow down the release of the money, but why? Is all this money being diverted to conservative only ridings? Is there some hidden reason why he can’t tell us where it is going , until after it has been dispersed?

Harper’s Economic Plan?

This entry is part 2 of 27 in the series harpernomics

Real economists all recognize, that in order to get out of this economic mess, people need to spend money, to buy more goods. Why, even our Stevie Boy acknowledges that, and for him, cutting the GST makes more sense, than cutting things like Income Taxes. Course, that doesn’t apply to Corporate Taxes, as those he is very willing to cut, just that for you and me, those aren’t as good as giving us a break on the GST.

Harper is already laying the groundwork for his upcoming election campaign, and that is basically what appears to drive his economic plan. He is adamant that his administration won’t raise the GST, a tax that his mentor & hero Brian Mulroney introduced. One that our current ambassador to the USA managed. Instead Harper is already saying that is what the Opposition wants to do, which is just wrong, so he says.

Even if you spent $40,000.00 the savings earned from Harper’s grand gift to us, would only be $800.00. Now if he had cut the income tax by that amount, and not raised other income taxes, we’d have a lot more money than that, to spend. A tax rate of 15% on $40,000.00 means you pay $9,000.00 in taxes. (Your provincial tax is roughly 50% of your federal tax) Drop that by 2% and your tax bill is $7,800.00. (provincial tax rate estimated at 50%)

That puts $1200 into your pocket, half as much more than the GST savings Mr. Harper has generously given us.

The reality is, that no one spends their entire income, on GST GOODS. At most, you may spend about half of that income, on goods that have the GST. So, if you factor that in, your GST SAVINGS IS $400.00 verses a tax savings, that is applied to all of your income, of $1200.00

You tell me, WHICH IS HIGHER? $400 OR $1200?

So when the Conservatives come campaigning for your Vote, keep in mind that they have refused to give you about $800 in your own money, because according to their top economist, Stephen Harper, the GST cut makes more economic sense than an income tax cut.

Business will Protect Us.

This entry is part 3 of 27 in the series harpernomics

The Harper & Bush policy of deregulating Goverment requirements for Business sounds good on the planning table, even sounds good on the campaign trail, where these political stooges extoll the virtues of keeping Government out of our lives.

It makes for great campaign speeches, and yes, it makes for getting elected, however the result of such misguided policies is all around us. The Sub Prime Mortgage disaster in the USA, has nearly collapsed the World Economy.

The unregulated Oil Industry has fueled inflation, adding to the cost of simply staying alive, never mind progressing one’s disposable income. It has placed many businesses at the verge of Bankruptcy, and has fueled more Outsourcing. It has forced middle class families to choose between eating, or heating their homes.

These failed policies have also placed Human Lives at risk, which seems to be a matter of jokes for our Agricultural Minister. The role of Government has changed under Stephen Harper, to the point where one can no longer trust in the safety of our food supply.

While Stephen Harper talks about gutting the Long Gun Registry, which aids Law Enforcement, which makes people accountable, he brings in Mandatory Sentences and removes the discretionary powers of Judges, claiming it will make us safer.

Yet at the same time, he guts the Food Inspection Agency, to the point where they haven’t conducted any tests for dangerous bacteria for the last three years, and even now, has delayed implementation of Government Testing.

To rely on Business to self test, is no different than putting the fox in the hen house, and instructing the fox to let the farmer know when some predator is about to attack his chickens.

Oh the explanations are good ones, even sound reasonable. The claim that the inspectors need training, to conduct testing, is perfectly logical, until you realize that for the last three years, no testing has been done, yet was a staple of procedures until the Harper Regime took power.

Makes sense, until you also realize that having CIFA, allows the Harper Government & its Business Backers, to have a ready scapegoat, which is why they don’t kill it, just gut it so it is totally ineffective.

Business has one thing on their minds, which is to make money. Some care about how they do that, but most don’t. They are consumed by their desire to make money, and make more of it, and yet that is who Harper thinks will better protect us, than Government. It is the same concept that George Bush followed, to the point where the USA no longer has a safe food supply, no longer has safe consumer goods.  AND NOW, NEITHER DO WE.

THIS IS, HARPERNOMICS.

Who Do You Believe?

This entry is part 4 of 27 in the series harpernomics

There has been a lot discussed about the economy. All during the last federal election, the Opposition constantly talked about how we were in a recession, that our economy was being harshly impacted by the USA Recession, and subsequent Global downturn.  Both Stephen Harper & Flaherty downplayed it, saying Canada would weather the bad stuff, that we were immune, due mainly to their handling of the situation.

Leading Economists disagreed then, and now suddenly Canada is in the midst of a recession. Our jobless rate is rising, and prices are rising, despite the sudden, unexplained, drop in fuel prices, that helped spur this Global Recession. Huge deficits are now being proposed and acted upon, across the Globe.

The Bank of Canada Governor, Mark Carney has been out in the front, explaining how deep the recession is, how we can better survive it, and how we need to spend a lot more, both in Government & personally. Yet our Prime Minister & Finance Minister, seem to constantly be disagreeing with the words from the top bank’s Governor, and the other leading economists.

Flaherty even has commented on how the recession is really very mild in Canada, again thanks to his Government’s astute handling of the situation.

Even Mr. Carney had a rosy picture to paint, but is now backtracking.

“As noted in our March interest rate decision, the Bank now expects the output gap will be considerably wider than before, and we do not expect it to begin to close until the first quarter of next year, at the earliest,” he said. ( source – CBC News )

Kind of makes one wonder, just how does one get to be Finance Minister or Bank of Canada Governor? I mean it seems these two bozo’s can’t get their stories straight, and there has been some rather interesting contradictory statements, that leave us all, scratching our heads. I mean it is pretty simple, or so it appears, and yet these two economic giants, along with our so called economist Prime Minister, have failed to forecast a single trend, accurately.

I mean who do we believe?

Harper, Flaherty, ignore the issues, when they first appear, and instead of being proactive, they are reactive, and yet, are they? I mean do they act out of what is a good choice, or are they reacting to protect their political interests? Is this deficit, a blessing, or will it become a nightmare. So many hidden expenses, that both Harper & Flaherty tell us are essential, but we don’t need to know the details, scares the crap out of me.

Then we have Carney, who tells us he forecasts an upturn, then backtracks saying things are a whole lot worse than he first forecast. So is his forecasts, based on real economic indicators, or is he being pressed to provide a rosy picture, to help bolster the political needs of his master, Harper?

And the Opposition is no better. I mean seriously, they urge more deficit spending, but give us no added details, just as Harper doesn’t. Okay we have a THIRTY BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT, YET DO YOU KNOW WHERE IT IS BEING SPENT? Like, how much of that deficit spending, is actually going to our pockets, to jobs and projects, that will create high paying employment?

Throwing money at failed businesses, like the Auto Industry just seems like flushing it down the toilet. Banks are being given a free hand, which hasn’t worked in the past, and sure hasn’t eased the credit crunch today, so why are we doing it? And then too, on the one hand, Harper tries to ease banking regulations, but then tells the world that our tougher regulations saved the banks, and Canada.

SO WHY IS HE TRYING TO EASE THOSE REGULATIONS NOW?

None of this makes much real common sense. I mean if regulations helped minimize the effect of the recession, why should we weaken them now? And why are we adding tax cuts to businesses, that have shipped jobs abroad, without insuring they will spend the added revenue here? How come we aren’t demanding some real hands on accountability from all these big corporations, as we throw billions of our money at them?

Where are the guarantees, for spending the cash, here, and in keeping the plants open? How come we attack the labor force, unions, in making them the scapegoat, yet seem okay with golden pension plans for CEO’s? I mean something just smells here, and it isn’t the rotting garbage in the trash can.

Seems to me, that we, the people, are once more being conned. Our Political leaders are too busy trying to score political brownie points, or in the case of Harper, trying to worm his way into Obama’s favor. Business is busy trying to cover its outrageous salaries and perks, at the expense of the workers, and the unions are desperately trying to keep their cushy jobs too, while the worker gets shafted.

Safety is a joke, quality is a joke, and yet no one seems to be able to figure out, why people aren’t spending money in buckets, to buy junk. I mean come on, let’s all trade in our old cars, to get a new one that won’t last half as long as the old one. Let’s all buy new washing machines, that fall apart just as the warranty expires, but hey not to worry, it uses a few pennies less in energy.

Something is really out of whack here. I mean who would have thought that organized religion would be leading the charge for racism and descrimination, or that so called conservatives would be rushing to spend billions upon billions, to line people’s pockets, who already have over full wallets and bank accounts, but hey, that’s what is happening.

Makes you wonder, if people like Flaherty, Harper, Carney, simply sit around some crystal ball, hoping for a clear picture, or maybe their horoscope in the daily paper, will give them some insight into what is about to happen. It is obvious they certainly are not looking at the proper economic indicators, or if they are, they aren’t able to figure out what they mean. Then too, not like they have to dig into their pockets to buy food, to pay for heating their homes, or figure out how to get to work, and look after the kids.

Where is the true conservative spirit, of demanding value for the buck spent, instead of spending the cash to those who can provide the most in campaign funding?

Where is the true conservative spirit, of protecting the most vulnerable of our citizens, instead of having secret hearings, of leaving citizens tortured, & stranded, simply because they are colored, and of the wrong religion?

JUST WHO CAN WE BELIEVE ANYMORE?

Mining Companies & Harper

This entry is part 5 of 27 in the series harpernomics

When Harper brought in his budget, one of the things he changed, was the authority for environmental reviews. A lot was in the news, then & earlier, about how he was moving to allow Mining Companies, many in British Columbia, from dumping their toxic waste, into our lakes & rivers. The claim was, that they weren’t really toxic, that much, and that it was vital for insuring the economic viability of these companies.

“The performance of the B.C. mining industry amidst a crashing economy in the later part of 2008 was nothing short of outstanding”, said Michael Cinnamond, a partner in PwC’s mining practice and co-author of the report. ( source – CBC News )

Setting aside, the environmental issue, the biggest argument put forth, was that it was vital to keep these industries growing, to insure their economic survival in tough times.

Well here is the proof, that what Harper & Our Mining Minister claimed, was utter, and complete BULL. While the environmental issue is before the courts, still not being acted on, these poor desperate companies are posting record profits, while the world economy is in the toilet.

Tell me again Mr. Harper how we need to protect their profits, at the expense of our lakes, rivers, and wildlife?
