No Criminal Charges in Cadman Affair
The RCMP have concluded their investigation, into allegations that the Harper Conservatives attempted to bribe Chuck Cadman. With only the evidence of a tape recording, and the words of both Chuck Cadman’s wife and daughter, the RCMP have concluded there isn’t any grounds for criminal proceedings.
The RCMP investigation stemmed from a biography of Cadman, in which Dona Cadman, Chuck Cadman’s wife, claims her husband told her that two Conservative agents met with him two days before the vote and offered him the life insurance policy in exchange for his support. (source - CBC News)
Now, once again instead of accepting the report, and I suppose vindication, Harper and his party plan to continue with their intimidation tactics of sueing the Liberals for bringing the matter up. Now, frankly, I believe if there was a wrong, then sure the Harper Tories are entitled to seek legal recourse, but is that really what they are doing?
I find it interesting, that all that has been determined, is that the RCMP are unable to find evidence, mainly because the central character witness is dead. What he said or didn’t say to his wife and daughter isn’t admissable in a criminal trial, so did anyone really expect charges to be laid? I don’t think so. Yet, Stephen Harper, outraged at the suggestion his Party might have made an attempt to Bribe Chuck Cadman, is sueing the Liberals, but frankly given his track record, I don’t doubt something was offered.
Anyone remember Emerson? You know the one who ran as a Liberal, won, then suddenly became a Conservative, and oh yeah, retained his cabinet post. Let us not forget his chief financial aide, who failed in his bid to win a seat, and is now a Senator and a Cabinet Minister. Then too, we have the whole Brian Mulroney, Airbus, Schreiber mess.
And Harper wonders why some might be suspicious when Chuck Cadman’s own wife says he told her of an attempted bribe?
If Stephen Harper is so worried about his reputation, about the so called blight the accussations have caused his reputation, why isn’t he pursuing his friend, mentor, and buddy Brian Mulroney for the return of money he took in a settlement on the Airbus deal? Brian Mulroney admitted to taking money from Schreiber, who in his testimony claimed he didn’t know, other than to have coffee once with.
Mulroney got Two Million Taxpayer Money for that Lie, and yet Stephen Harper has done nothing but obstruct the investigation into it. HE has threatened, bullied, in hoping it would go away, so how about tit for tat? Let him pretend he’s squeaky clean, but let’s make it a fair game.
