Beef Recall in Victoria

Thrifty Foods, owned by Sobey’s from Ontario, has a beef recall. Is it careless food safety on the part of the supplier, or is it the uncaring, unsafe handling by the store itself? Have we gotten away from having any real oversight of our food chain, simply to appease corporate contributors? Harper has altered the food safety standards, has made it now self governing, so is any inspecton really about protecting us, or about rubber stamping a tainted and flawed system of self regulation?

Food recalls continue, they climb and as usual come long after the fact. This is what happens when Government chooses self regulation for an industry. Standards slip, slide, and simply evaporate, and we pay the price for this type of Government. Protectionism is a bad word in Harper Land, and other so called Conservatives and yet they practise it with abandon when it comes to food and product safety. They rush to protect the corporate elite who cut costs, who turf safety regulations, in order to maintain a healthy profit margin, while sacrificing our safety. This is protectionism at its worst, and it is called self regulation. They ignore the added burden placed on our health care system, because they’d rather it be privately run anyways, so more companies can get in on the taxpayer gravy train, and funnel more money to their campaign war chests. This is Harper, and his Conservatives, where food recalls continue to rise, where the facts and details are kept buried in paperwork, because he cuts jobs in the departments whose job it is to release this stuff, to monitor our food safety. This is todays new conservatism. Food recalls aren’t because we are lazy, or demand more foods, it is because we put profits over safety, we put corporate contributions over basic common sense health safety.

With a bad economy, you have to wonder at some in the corporate world, at how willing they are to throw away product quality, in the name of a few extra pennies of profit. More recalls, more failed trade agreements, and to top it all off, fake emails from the tax man. Like when was war declared on the average citizen? Seems that everyone, from the scammers to the greedy corporations have declared open season on consumers, while the governments of the world, try to figure out how come all their tax cuts & free trade deals went sour.

Mystery Meat

Do Corporate Interests count more than the safety of the individual? I wonder, given how the latest Listeria recalls come late Saturday, and Sunday. It isn’t like they didn’t know beforehand, but the announcement comes Saturday evening? So what, after most people go for their weekend grocery shopping, they tell us what to look for? Course that is assuming we checked the website first, or were lucky enough to hear about it on the radio or news. Not like the media bothers, as they are too busy pushing the hidden agendas of their corporate sponsors, which is what the Government is doing, as well. I don’t get it anymore, have we all lost of morals, our values? When did a companies bottom line become more important than human lives?

More Beef Recalled

Just in time for the weekend barbecue, more beef recalled. Not to worry though, as it is just a over a million pounds, mostly being used in other products, so by the time it gets to our plate, well we’ll be dead from the lead poisoning from the other stuff. If not, well then we will have survived another round of incompetence from the protection agencies. After all, it isn’t an accident that recalls of this magnitude now come at the end of a news cycle, like on a Friday. And so what if it is the same company that just last month recalled over Five Million Pounds, they employ a few hundred people and they gotta make a profit. So why shouldn’t they be allowed to keep on producing, and putting people’s health at risk? Least they are making a profit, and isn’t that the purpose of the FDA, to insure food producers and drug companies make money? Sure isn’t about protecting the consumer.

Attack of Killer Tomatoes

The notion that the FDA can’t say where the salmonella outbreak came from is crazy. How can they not know exactly where it came from? Mind you this isn’t the first time they have dropped the ball. Remember how long it took them to figure out where the contaminated lettuce came from? Makes you wonder what else they are dropping the ball on, such as say Beef? Maybe there have been a lot more instances of Mad Cow, and maybe it has made its way into the food chain. Like how can they be trusted to tell the truth, when they can’t even trace back where a tainted veggie came from? Yet they can tell us which states and countries are producing safe tomatoes? Like how? How do they know?

Is the food chain safe? Not from disease, but from human greed and complacency? I mean are we at more risk due to Corporate Greed and total lack of caring about the people who rely on their food stuffs, or is it the germs we need fear? I rather think we are at greater risk, not because there are more bugs out there, but because there are more unscrupulous owners and operators and less inspectors.

The Hidden Recalls

At the current pace, recalls this year will rise by 70% over last year, a record year for dangerous goods being recalled. Yet despite that there are no new inspectors, no new funding for protection agencies, nor are there new fines or regulations in place. Congress still gets its holidays, still get their trips all over, and the funding of Billions to the War continues, while the lives of Children continue to lay in harm’s way. Fine to support the Troops, but how about supporting their Children too?

New Label Laws

Finally, the ‘Made in Canada’ label will mean something, as it applies to food stuffs. The new regulations and definitions of what is ‘made in Canada’ is a huge victory for consumers, and for the country as a whole. While George Bush and the Democrats fail to protect their own citizens, at least even our Conservatives recognize the need to make label laws clear and concise. The new food safety labeling laws, will give consumers an edge on what to buy, what to ignore, and what to boycott. Least as it applies to food. I mean now when a can of Tuna says ‘made in Canada’ it won’t mean that just the label was printed in Canada, but that all of it, including contents are local. A victory for the people, at last.

Additional Product Recalls

The list of recalled products continues unabated it seems. Goods from Communist China continues to lead the list, but other countries as well seem to be sending more dangerous goods. Is it that these other countries are that backwards, or is it more that the companies buying these goods are simply unconcerned as to what products are used in their manufacture? Big Business is about making profits, not about providing quality goods for a reasonable price. It isn’t about making the goods last, simply about making a profit, even at the risk of people’s lives, including those of Children. This is the Bush Legacy.

Child Seat Recalls

It seems that Big Business has decreed a war on consumer safety, including the safety and well being of children. With imports rising, bringing in lead tainted goods, goods that break, and car seats that simply don’t protect, or increase risk of injury, it is an all out offensive against the Consumer. And where is the Government? Why they are too busy getting campaign funds from these companies. What else did you expect?

You have to wonder, are the recalls being listed all of them? Are there perhaps more recalls, that are simply not deemed important enough to worry about? Or could it be that some of the companies are able to have the recalls deferred, for a fee naturally. I mean is consumer protection a priority of any government, or is it merely a means of insuring higher campaign contributions?

Once more the inability of manufacturers to PROTECT CONSUMERS is highlighted by the current recall by the Canadian Food Agency, in frozen hamburger sold nationally by M&M Meat Markets, as well as by Costco Stores.
