Coalition or Election?

Frankly I think that for Canada, a coalition government will be rather interesting, and perhaps far more beneficial than Stephen Harper could imagine. Yes, he will be out of a job, without any real power, which is really what his him steamed. In some ways, you could call it a ‘house revolt’ which really isn’t that far off. What Mr. Harper has forgotten, IS THAT A MAJORITY OF CANADIANS DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM in the last election, but did for the Coalition Parties. Not like Harper himself hadn’t tried it either, which I find rather interesting.
But opposition members have denied the charges. They fired back with charges of hypocrisy, citing a letter to former governor general Adrienne Clarkson in 2004, signed by then opposition leaders Harper, Gilles Duceppe and Jack Layton that discussed the prospects of dissolving Parliament if the government of Paul Martin, the prime minister, was to be defeated.
The letter stated that the opposition parties, which constituted a majority in the House, have “been in close consultation” and that if Clarkson was asked to dissolve Parliament, she should “consult the opposition leaders and consider all of your options before exercising your constitutional authority.” (source – CBC News)
Curious isn’t it, that a plan he himself toyed with, is somehow now a power grab. If it is, then it was then too, but for some reason, Mr. Harper continues to go with one law for everyone else, another for him. This perhaps is one single reason why so many are upset with him, why so many refuse to support him, despite three attempts at forming a majority government. HIS ARROGANCE.
The country is facing serious economic times, one that Mr. Harper has finally admitted, in his claim that we are about to enter a recession, and yet he offers no plan to help reduce the pain that will cause Canadians. Oh he has a plan, he says, but for some unexplainable reason, he is unwilling to divulge it to us, the people. He talks about Democracy, but sure doesn’t seem to act like he is a democratic leader.
One thing I find interesting too, is that during a tough economic period, Mr. Harper opted to increase the size of cabinet to 38 members, and here comes the coalition team, who believes it can manage the affairs of state with 24 cabinet members. Now I know, that may seem inconsequential, but it does send a visible signal, of belt tightening. And let’s face it, the stock markets are big on ‘perception’ over ’substance’.
I’d say too, the call for another election this soon after the last one, is a waste of money or is it that Mr. Harper thinks he can gain a majority by obscuring the reason for this move by the Opposition Parties? Fact is, we can better use the $300 Million, and it does give us some stability of at least 18 months. Something we need, to address the economic realities today. Something Mr. Harper is quite willing to ignore.
