National Unity at Risk by Going Green

Election 2008 (Canada) Comments (0)

According to Stephen Harper, the Green Plan by the Liberal Party will risk our National Unity, and bring about a Recession. Interesting comment from the man who is in charge, who has presided over a strong vibrant economy that is now threatened by Inflation, by higher Cost of Livings, because he refuses to do anything about the Energy Costs, set by his Oil Industry Supporters.

“The carbon tax will do more than undermine the economy,” Harper said to a crowd of business leaders. “By undermining the economy and by re-centralizing money and power in Ottawa, it can only undermine the progress we have been making on national unity.” (source – CBC News)

A rather interesting claim, don’t you think?

By shifting away from non renewable resources like Oil, to fuel our economy, we risk a recession, according to Harper. Now I don’t know, but isn’t the goal of Government supposed to be about preserving our Nation? How is that possible if he allows those resources to be squandered, all for the sake of profits today? How does he propose that we keep our air clean, our water clean, our land clean, if we continue to ignore the threats of not just Global Warming, but pollution?

Yes, the cost will be expensive, no doubt about it, but what is the alternative? Bury our heads in the sand, and hope we die before the problem explodes all around us? That isn’t going to preserve National Unity, now is it? Seriously, to use that kind of fear mongering simply because you don’t have an environmental plan, is just irresponsible, and wrong.

The Canadian Dollar today hit a 15 month low, other currencies held steady against the US Dollar, so tell me again, whose plan is causing a recession? I mean this country had a huge surplus, when Stephen Harper took power, now look at it. Do we still have a huge surplus? NO! And yet, that somehow is the fault of everyone but the Conservatives?

It is also rather hypocritical of Stephen Harper to lay claim to wanting to protect our National Unity. This is a man who believes each province should have total and absolute control over the resources, without any consideration for the rest of the Country. We have seen how that works, by simply looking south at the United States. Regional Government DOES NOT WORK, and sure as hell, would only acerbate the differences within the framework of Confederation. So once again, Stephen Harper is putting his political interests ahead of the Nation, and that isn’t going to protect National Unity.

Let us keep in mind that Harper is a staunch supporter of the North American Union, which basically eliminates Mexico & Canada as nations. That is what Stephen Harper supports, not a strong INDEPENDENT CANADA, but an appendage to the United States. So do we really want to be like them? Do we want to see our housing prices drop 50%? How about having our banks fail, because they got greedy like their American Counter Parts?

Stephen Harper is our version of George Bush. It is that simple, and even now, George Bush still doesn’t believe in Global Warming, even with proof before him. The Ice Caps are melting, but hey not to worry, that means more water to pollute. Why Stephen Harper is agreeable to allowing the Mining Industry to dump toxic waste into lakes & rivers. After all, industry shouldn’t have to pay to keep our environment safe, clean, or fresh, now should  it?

And you have to admire Dion, who is fighting back. I mean the guy doesn’t come across as being vocal, or strong, but he sure has been fighting back lately. That too, is a good sign, and something I think Stephen Harper hasn’t counted on.

“While he was busy talking about building firewalls in the West, I was fighting to keep my country together,” Dion said in New Brunswick, where he was speaking to the Board of Trade. “I do not need any lessons from Stephen Harper on fighting for the national unity of my country.” (source – CBC News)

Now that is certainly more of what one expects from a possible Prime Minister. And then, let us not forget Jack Layton. He actually is talking different this election, than he did three years ago. It is like, this time around, he actually wants the job of being Prime Minister. Now that is a huge shift, given how he kept talking about why people should elect him as the opposition, last time out.

“We’re there to replace him,” he said. “I am running in this election to replace Stephen Harper and to take his job from him. That’s something [Bloc Leader] Gilles Duceppe can’t do.” (more from CBC News)

At the start of this campaign, I wondered if we would see a real election, or just sound bites and tasteless ads. Well, yes, we have had those, thanks to the Conservatives, but we are also seeing something different. We are seeing leaders coming out fighting, saying to me, they want my vote. They aren’t quoting old cliches, but are actually showing that they have some guts.

The Green plan by the NDP Party looks interesting, and is in contrast to the Liberal Party green plan. I can’t wait to see the Green Party plan, and I wonder, anyone betting that towards the end of the campaign, that the Tories might come up with one as well? Somehow I am sure it’ll be a rehash of John McCain – George Bush plan, which is nothing but tax cuts for those who don’t need it.

Simple truth is that the greatest threat to National Unity, is to elect a Government that is a clone of the current administration in Washington. Canada is different, we aren’t 300 million people stuffed into a shoe box, plus we have an abundance of natural resources, that we need to hoard. What may work down South, doesn’t mean it will work up here. And frankly, the policies from down South have accomplished nothing, other than to line the pockets of special interest groups, to split a country apart, and to leave the majority of its people near bankruptcy.

We want that up here? If we vote for Stephen Harper, that is EXACTLY what we are saying.
