USA - Unrepentent, Unyielding, Unbending, Arrogant.
Let me see, they secretly hold a hearing, deport a guy for being a terrorist, where he is tortured and abused for a year, they fail to tell his country that they shipped him off to another country, and by golly, the did nothing wrong? FUCK THAT SHIT!
Richard Skinner, Homeland Security’s inspector general, told a congressional committee on Thursday that an investigation of U.S. officials involved in Arar’s detention at a New York airport and subsequent deportation to a Syrian prison has cleared them of any wrongdoing1.
Let me see, they take a Canadian Citizen, Arar, off a plane, hold him in jail, then deport him to Syria NOT TO CANADA, after getting what they call, assurances from Syria, that he wouldn’t be tortured. Uh huh, not let me see, this is Syria, a country George W. Bush has called a State Sponsor of Terrorism, a nation of Torture, of INHUMANE ACTS, but he is willing to take their vague assurances that they won’t torture this guy when he is shipped back to them.
There is no doubt that OUR OWN GOVERNMENT SCREWED UP, but unlike the United States of America, we admitted the mistake, and took the proper corrective measures to attempt to insure it wouldn’t happen again. Of Course that was before good old Stevie Boy got lectured to by his boss George Bush. Still, fact is, we have apologized, and paid him for his suffering, and yet here is the so called Greatest Democracy Ever, telling the world that they did nothing wrong. That they were right in deporting a Canadian Citizen to Syria.
At least in Canada, the Principle of Democracy exist beyond just words. Yes, we paid out about 9 Million Dollars for the errors made by the RCMP, but Arar spent a year being tortured. Surely he is entitled to compensation, and here is the Department of Homeland Security claiming it’s official did nothing wrong, that it didn’t violate any laws, in secretly DEPORTING ARAR.
Hopefully the election of a new President will change things, but somehow I just doubt it. I mean talk about the hypocrisy, the bullying, that the USA seems to be so accomplished at. On the one hand you have George Bush, Condaleeza Rice, Bill Gates, and others talking about how evil Syria is, then on the other hand you have the USA Government taking their word that they won’t torture a guy. Like give me a break here. Now you have Homeland Security saying they did nothing wrong.
How come they sent Arar to Syria? He was a Canadian after all, or is Canada now riskier than Syria?
“How could any assurances from Syria be deemed reliable? This is, after all, the country that President Bush himself cited for its legacy of torture, oppression, misery and ruin and that the state department routinely condemns in its annual country reports for torture,” he said, adding that he knows of no reason why Arar shouldn’t have been sent back to Canada2.
Civil Rights are the cornerstone of any Democracy. If a society protects its people, even under the worst cases, in the long run it can survive anything. Even the most vile of creatures deserves a fair hearing, a fair trial. Under the Patriot Acts I & II no such fair hearings exist. People who may be guilty, or not, languish in legal limbo, because George W. Bush and his Countrymen are afraid of the dark. It is what drove Hitler, and it is what now drives America.
