As the Republican Party is about to air an attack ad against Senator Barack Obama, Pastor Wright is finally speaking out, about his sermons, about his reasons, and about the whole media circus that ensued the release of his controversial sermons.
Wright said that, as an activist, he is accustomed to being “at odds with the establishment,” but the response to the sermons has been “very, very unsettling.” (source)
What i find interesting, is that he is very correct in what he says. We have only heard SNIPPETS of the whole sermon, that they are taken out of context, and replayed over and over again, until that is all we remember. We don’t stop to think of what was the whole sermon, what was the circumstances surrounding that time, when the sermons were preached.
For example, examine the words. ‘God Damn America for its Racism’. How many times have we heard him uttering those words, then a flash over to Barack Obama, or to some pundit talking about Obama, about how could he be in a church where such words were spoken. Hilary Clinton even made that remark, that she wouldn’t be part of any Church that tolerated such words, but in what circumstances were those words spoken?
Was it because at the time, some crime against blacks had happened? Could it have been a lynching or some attack by the Klan? Think about it for a moment, would you not be pissed too, say such things if someone close to you had just been gunned down, or tortured?
Now I am not saying that was the situation, but how do we know? Did the whole sermon explain what he meant, or did it support those words? WE DO NOT KNOW, and so if we don’t know, how can we have condemned both Pastor Wright, and Barack Obama? Or is it simply a racial thing?
Think about it, would it matter what the preacher said, if Obama was White? Would the Media be on such a witch hunt, if he was not colored, or if the preacher wasn’t? What about some of the things that many good god fearing white preachers have said? Reverend Phelps is one who comes to mind, and then how about all those politicians that kissed Don Imus’s butt? Now he certainly said a lot of crap, until called on it, but hey, he is back on the air. Would a Black Shock Jock be?
Now the Republicans plan to use those words, those SNIPPETS, in order to gain a political advantage. And it might work too, though I would hope it wouldn’t. Seems to me, there are enough problems out there, to worry about what one preacher says in the heat of the moment, or under PERHAPS trying times. I don’t think we should be holding any political leader accountable for what their religious leader says. After all, look at the words of Pope Benedict, and so should we hold all Catholic Politicians in disrespect for the Pope’s very public criticism of the United States?
