Romney Takes Main but Doesn’t

I think that whoever has come up with the system of Primaries, Caucuses, needs to have their heads examined a bit closer. To begin with, from what I gather, the caucus in Maine, is going for Mitt Romney, but the kicker is, IT ISN’T BINDING. Like uh, why bother then? I mean why should everyone get together, vote on a candidate, then do it all over again later on?
The nonbinding votes, the first step toward electing 18 Maine delegates to the Republican National Convention, were taking place in public schools, Grange halls, fire stations and town halls across the state. (source)
I simply fail to understand the logic of the whole primary thing. I mean, to begin with, people vote in January and February, and in most elections that generally decides the entire Nomination process. Then of course there is the convention itself, where the winner of the Primaries is Anointed Nominee.
Conventions aren’t cheap by the way. Neither is running in Primaries.
Given the cost to run in the Primaries, it makes you wonder if the Political Parties aren’t simply looking for ways to sell themselves, & their candidates? I mean look at the money spent so far, with a lot more to come if Tuesday’s Super Primaries doesn’t decide the issue. Then, if it does, you will still have states holding these primaries, that will mean nothing, but still cost money.
And while that is going on, if a Nominee is decided, well the Campaign for the White House will begin, even if they all say it doesn’t really begin until after Labor Day. Like, yeah, I can see Clinton or Romney waiting to launch their campaigns. Hell, I can’t see any candidate who wins the delegates this Tuesday waiting. Just going to cost more to run for office, and that leaves the door wide open for Special Interest Lobbyists.
This is what got people the Republican Gang, and now has given them the Democrat Gang, who walk around with ‘For Sale‘ signs on their backs. It is written across their foreheads, and people wonder how Politics became so crooked? Look at the costs you subject potential candidates to, and how you keep lengthening the campaign season.
Then you have this Maine caucus that is non binding. So Candidates campaign, to win a popularity contest, then have to keep on campaigning, for getting the delegates. I mean talk about a waste of money. I suppose for Mitt Romney, though, it is good news. Better to win a popularity contest, than lose one, and who knows, maybe it’ll get him a few more delegates somewhere down the line, but not like its going to matter now.
If a Primary is needed, why not simply make it a week or two before the Convention? Have a real SUPER PRIMARY TUESDAY, where ALL FIFTY STATES VOTES. It will give all the candidates an opportunity to debate, to campaign, without putting stupid deadlines on them. It also could keep a few candidates in the field, instead of knocking them all off in the first month. Just look at the Democrats, where it is down to TWO NOW.
This campaign season began with what, twenty eight Presidential Candidates on both sides? Now it is down to SIX IN TOTAL?
Seems that all the Primaries do, is limit choices, increase candidate expenses, and opens the door to graft, and other shady financing, simply for people to run. Somehow, that just doesn’t make sense to me.
