Less Than 48 Hours

Well we are down to the crunch time and it’s interesting to compare the comments, statements made by those seeking our most precious gift, our vote.
Frankly I cannot believe the nonsense that we have seen in this election, especially from the NDP and New Conservatives, as well as the Liberals and the Bloc and Green parties. I mean obviously politics is a dirty game these days, I think we can all thank Brian Mulroney for that and certainly Kim Campbell, the predecessors to Stephen Harper and his Klan.
What gets me is that we have the NDP whose leader won’t say he’s running for the job, just second place. Now, maybe I am dumb but frankly that turns me off, never mind the policies. A party that helped get National Health and here it is, running for position instead of winning. How does that help protect the social programs they claim to represent?
Then we have the Liberals who really have been absent for the beginning of this campaign. Now maybe that has been their strategy so as to conserve their resources for the end of the campaign, but again, not really something I think is right. I mean isn’t a campaign supposed to be about issues and isn’t it better to have those issues out front at the onset so we can debate them instead of the personalities?
The Bloc had done what I expected. Yes they represent the views of Quebec and are dealing solely on regional issues. Nice, but when they have so much power in a parliament that might be fractured, I am not sure if that is truly in Quebec’s best interest. Though I have to admit, Duceppe is certainly someone who would give any federalist a good run on a national scale. Still regional vs federal powers is something I can’t see working for such a large land mass country as Canada with a small population. We simply need each other, whether its Newfoundland or British Columbia or Quebec to make us whole and unique.
The Green party certainly seems non existent in this campaign. I wouldn’t have minded seeing their leader in the debates and given how they allowed Duceppe, would have been appropriate I think to have allowed the Green leader in, whoever it is. See, there too is their basic problem, not many know who is their leader.
Watched some of CBC and the Green candidate did mention his name, though I forget it, but his comment that the green party is more about the issues versus the leader or individual candidate is nice and idealistic, but impracticle. As a voter we need to put a face to those policies and a leader is one who can illuminate us on what those policies are. Frankly I haven’t a clue and that is a shame. I wish I did know what their policies were, as who knows, I might choose to vote for them.
And now last we come to my favorite party, the New Conservatives formerly the Alliance Party formerly the Reform Party but better known to me as the Party of Exclusionists.
The Harper Klan has attacked the Liberals from day one, calling Martin untrustworthy, claiming he is responsible for the Sponsorship scandel even though the preliminary Gomery report clears Mr Martin.
They have used their advertising budget to condem him, to mock him by using sound bites to condemn him and the Liberals then claim the Liberal Attack Ads that don’t use sound bites, use actual statements, are Un Canadian.
Who is doing the attacking here?
Given that there are more Harper ads than any other party out there until this week, who has been leading the attack ad bandwagon? Bit revisionist in my mind,
Or how about when Stephen Harper tells a person on a low income that his GST cut is better for poor people because after all, they spend more. But the simple facts are that a tax cut by the Liberals puts nearly over $2000 into the pockets of low income people vs Harper’s GST tax cut which works out to less than $250 over the same five years, and that is assuming we get the full 2% cut.
Course then let us look at the campaign slogan. How many of us in the West or even in Ontario know there are TWO slogans for the conservatives?
Did you know in English Canada the slogan is ‘Stand Up For Canada‘ yet in Quebec there is a totally different slogan? Yep, see in Quebec the slogan is “Changeons pour vrai,” which I interpret to mean, “Let’s make a real change.” (taken from CBC ‘Your Turn‘)
Surely the slogan is good enough for all or none, yet Mr Harper and his Klan think not. Kind of shows to me that on the one hand he talks about national unity but in his actions he plays to the divisions in order to gain seats.
How is that trustworthy?
Or again, as most of Harper’s campaign is about the scandal and how his government would be different, what about the simple fact that while he slams the Liberals for being bought, for all the Lobbyists they have, his own war room running this election is filled with those very same Lobbyists? (source – CBC ‘Your Turn’)
It is kind like to me where a fox is telling the sheep that they have a wolf in their midst and so let him in instead. I mean really, patronage is part of politics and NO party seems willing to end it and that is a shame. No, the NDP are as bad except their funding comes from Union big shots instead of Corporate Head Hunters. Frankly they are both the same in my mind.
If we want to end patronage, end the effectiveness of lobbyists then let us simply pay for a national election equally End private contributions over a set amount, so no individual, no corporation, no union has any monetary influence on a political party. Make it about the Issues!
I also find it interesting that when pressed on the economy, Stephen Harper professes to be an economist yet when you add up his figures they don’t compute. He pledges programs that he says won’t cost more than 7 billion or so, though his GST cut is $4 billion out of the treasury, and in fact most economists say the Harpler plan is more like a cost of $22 Billion dollars… now me no rocket scientist but if Harper is an economist and can’t count, how can we trust him with our surplus?
So in less than 48 hours we get to choose who will lead us, and just on economic policies, in money in my pocket not the feds, I have to wonder whatever happened to the Conservatives? I mean they used to be for fiscal restraint back in the days of Joe Clark and Dief, but ever since Mulroney and now Harper, they seem to be cut social programs, increase prisons, and go to war.
How is that fiscal responsiblity?
