Review
In light of recent revelations about the underbelly of the Catholic Church, noted Aussie-born International journalist and short-story writer, Peter Eros’ first novel is a sensational saga of a Gay priest, who despite his sexuality is yet a good priest.
For over forty years as familiar with the inner working of Washington DC as he is with the Vatican and the Catholic Church, Peter Eros’ writes with an insider’s know-how about his hero, Jude Close, a poster boy for throwing out the celibacy rule. Freeing his conscience and rationalizing his sexuality with an equal devotion to Tantric Yoga, Jude embraces the free love ethic of the 60’s through the 90’s in the Gay underworld.
This novel throws a spotlight on the behind the scenes politics and shenanigans of a Church in transition to an uncertain future, and a priest who is certain of his goal to make the Church face the challenges and the necessary reforms to make a viable institution that the sexually emancipated might still be able to respect, while paralleling the growth and sophistication of gay club life and pornography.
From youthful fumbling to high school and college romance and a whole range of international and colorblind entanglements on three continents, we follow Jude’s career in the Church and that of his first love Treat’s career and travels as an anthropologist/paleontologist taking him to remote parts of Africa and Asia. Their adventures with many loves and fuckbuddies, reveal behind the scenes Washington DC and Baltimore, Rome and the Vatican, Kenya, Borneo and New Guinea, all detailed with loving care, recreating a time before the plague and after. The sex is prolific and believable and the priestly emancipation message is clear and compelling, whether you’re a believer or not. There’s plenty of meat in this book for homolectuals as well as those who just want a good horny read.
